What Is Manta? AI Employees, Explained

Manta (heymanta.ai) is where a business hires AI employees. You pick a role, describe the job in plain English, connect the tools you already run, and the agent starts answering. It works the phone, WhatsApp, SMS and your website with the same script and the same voice. Here is what Manta actually is, what an agent can and cannot do, and what it costs.

What is Manta?

Manta is a platform for hiring AI employees. Not a chatbot widget, not a script builder: a place where you name a job, train an agent to do it, connect it to the software you already run, and put it to work on a real phone number.

The roles businesses start with are the ones that leak money when nobody picks up. A receptionist that answers every call, day and night. A booking agent that fills the calendar. A collections agent that chases what you are owed without souring the relationship. A support agent that clears the easy tickets so your people handle the hard ones. If the job you need is not on the list, you describe it and Manta builds it.

Manta Technologies, Inc. is a US company. The product lives at heymanta.ai.

What does an AI employee actually do?

An agent does four things, in this order, on every conversation:

  • It picks up. First ring, every time, including at 9pm on a Sunday. No hold music, no queue.
  • It answers from your material. Your prices, your hours, your policies, your service area. Not the model's guess — the script you approved.
  • It acts in your tools. Books the slot in your calendar, writes the customer to your CRM, sends the payment link, updates the ticket.
  • It hands off when it should. A complaint, a legal question, an upset caller, anything outside the script: the agent transfers to a person immediately, with the conversation so far. If nobody picks up, it takes a message.

What it does not do is improvise. Anything the script does not cover becomes a hand-off, never a guess.

How do you hire one?

Three steps, and none of them involve writing prompts.

  1. Pick the role. Receptionist, booking, collections, support, outbound follow-up, or a custom job you describe yourself.
  2. Train it on your business. Upload the price list, the FAQ, the intake form, the objections your team hears every day. Then call the agent and correct it out loud, the same way you would correct a new hire.
  3. Point your number at it. Forward your existing line in a few minutes, or port it over fully. The people who already have your number notice nothing except that someone answers.

Every agent starts in a supervised launch: you listen, you correct, and nothing reaches a customer until you switch the role live.

Is it safe to put an agent in front of customers?

Recordings and transcripts belong to your business. Manta never sells them and never trains public models on them. Recording is off until you turn it on, and when you do, the agent plays the notice your jurisdiction requires before anything is stored; a caller who declines is served with nothing kept.

Every connected tool is scoped to what the role needs. A receptionist can create a booking but not delete your calendar. A collections agent can read a balance but not issue a refund. Card details go straight to the payment processor and are never stored by us. Data is AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.3 in transit, and a SOC 2 Type II audit is underway. Full detail lives on the security page.

Frequently asked

Is Manta a chatbot?

No. A chatbot answers from a short menu on a website and gives up. A Manta agent takes a real phone call, follows a script you approve, writes to your calendar and CRM, and transfers to a person when it should.

Do I have to change my phone number?

No. Forward your existing number to Manta in a few minutes, or port it across fully if you would rather Manta hold it. Either way nothing changes for the people who already have your number.

Will callers know they are talking to an AI?

You decide how the agent introduces itself, and in some jurisdictions disclosure is required. Most businesses have the agent say it is an assistant for the business and offer a person on request. Manta will not help you pretend an agent is human.

What happens if the agent does not know the answer?

It hands off. You name the topics that must reach a person, and anything outside the approved script transfers immediately with the conversation so far. If nobody picks up, the agent takes a message and logs it.

How much does Manta cost?

Pilot is free: one agent, a monthly allowance of minutes, and every channel. One agent is $399 a month. A full desk of agents is $799 a month. No setup fee and no per-seat pricing.

How long before an agent is answering calls?

Most businesses have an agent taking test calls the same day and answering real ones inside a week, after a supervised launch where you listen and correct it.
